Chamonix is a European mountain town famed for mountaineering, alpine skiing and adventure sports. Located in southeastern France, the commune of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc includes 16 villages and hamlets.Chamonix is a winter sports resort nestling near Mont Blanc and serves as an ideal playground for almost all types of outdoor activities. It is renowned for extreme sports like ice-climbing, rock climbing, extreme skiing, paragliding, rafting and canyoning. Chamonix is also famous for its spectacular cable car constructed in 1955, then the highest cable car in the world. The cable car system has made it possible to cross the entire Mont Blanc Massif by cable car.In 1770 the first Guesthouse was here to supply accommodation for the increasing numbers of ‘adventurers’ and tourists who flocked to the region. By 1816 the first ‘luxury’ hotels in Chamonix were being opened. In 1821 ‘La Compagnie des Guides’ was formed to provide emergency services for mountaineers and to guide tourists about dangerous peaks and glaciers of the region.The first ever Winter Olympics took place in Chamonix in 1924 and between 1927 and 1956 four new cable cars were built to ferry people up and down the mountains.
